Monitored Student Status
Explanation of this level of assistance
1. Who is in the category of a “Monitored” student?
Any student who has an Educational-Psychological evaluation which is current (within the last 3 years) and on file in the Selective Studies office, and whose parent has met with the Director to discuss the recommended classroom interventions and testing accommodations is able to receive services at the monitored level.

2. What is the difference between a Monitored student and a Study Skills 902 student?
A Study Skills 902 student is enrolled in a Study Skills class, assigned by grade, to address the student’s needs. This student is taught by the High School Selective Studies teacher, who supplements the student’s curriculum with strategies for more effective learning to take place. The High School Selective Studies teacher works in conjunction with the student’s parents as well as all of the student’s teachers. There is an additional tuition fee associated with this class.
A monitored student is NOT enrolled in a Study Skills class, but may exercise classroom and/or testing accommodations as prescribed in the student’s Ed-Psych Evaluation and the Selective Studies Evaluation and Summary Treatment Plan. This student is monitored by the parents and eventually learns to advocate for his/her own learning. The communication is initiated by the parent and/or student, not the Selective Studies department nor the High School teacher. There is $510 of additional annual tuition fee associated with “Monitored” status.

3. How does the Selective Studies office keep track of the status of Monitored students?
Two documents are kept in confidential student files in the Selective Studies Office which indicate his/her status:
• a current (within the last three years) “Evaluation Summary and Treatment Plan” (ESTP) which summarizes the current Ed-Psych evaluation
• a “Letter of Accommodations” which signifies the agreement signed by the Director and the students’ teachers documenting the approved strategies

4. Who is responsible in the process of monitoring a student’s progress?
Our goal is to partner with parents and students in the academic progress and social-emotional needs of each individual. Specifically,
• It is the responsibility of the parents to solidify the understanding of how his/her accommodations are to be used in testing and as interventions for learning in the classroom and communicate that to the child.
• It is the joint responsibility of the parents and the school to teach your child to advocate for himself as he matures into self-managing his learning disability/differences.
• It is the responsibility of the parent to monitor the student as he/she learns to manage classroom assignments and daily responsibilities. Most grades and assignments are found on Net Classroom or online.providencechristianacademy.org.
• It is the responsibility of the parent to monitor the effects of the child’s learning disability and the strategies that he/she needs to learn most effectively.
• It is the student’s responsibility to sign up for tests when using the lab in Selective Studies, two days prior to the actual test date. This will allow him/her to receive the testing accomodations that are outlined in his ESTP.
• It is the responsibility of the parents to monitor how their child is learning to use the testing guidelines and to communicate with the classroom teachers.
• It is the responsibility of the parents to keep the communication lines open between home and school with respect to grades, homework, and tests.
• It is the teacher’s responsibility to partner with parents by answering emails in a timely manner. It is best to limit emails from parents to once per week.

5. Who determines a change in the accommodations of a Monitored student?
The parent works with the student daily to determine the effectiveness of the accommodations in learning. Please contact the teacher and Director at any time to discuss academic progress or related problems your child may experience. The goal is to work as a team for the overall success of the students in Selective Studies at Providence.
