Overview
The Foreign Language curriculum focuses on written and spoken communication in the target language. Students are encouraged to generate personal language in a meaningful way in both oral and written forms. They are exposed to normal social situations, and given practice in handling themselves in the target language. They hear, read, and interpret a variety of texts including poetry, newspaper articles, letters, short stories, and more. The students are given an opportunity to grow in their awareness of the target culture and the differences that exist between that culture and their own. Students are able to begin to read and understand key Bible verses. This will help them to begin to express their faith in the novice level. In addition, students who study a foreign language perform better on the verbal section of the SAT.

French I  60.0110   1 CRE
This course introduces students to basic French vocabulary, grammar, and idiomatic expressions, and emphasizes spoken and written communication. Students also begin developing an appreciation of the culture of France and the French-speaking world.

French II  60.0120   1 CRE
Students continue their study of vocabulary and more advanced grammar. Greater emphasis is placed upon spoken and written communication in French, as well as reading comprehension. Students further their knowledge and appreciation of French culture.

French III  60.0130   1 CRE
Students expand their understanding of advanced grammatical concepts through reading and discussion of French literature (including short stories, periodicals, and literature extracts). Strong emphasis is placed on interactive verbal communication and writing proficiency.

French IV  60.0140   1 CRE
Students continue to expand their understanding of advanced grammatical concepts through topical studies in travel, health, relationships, careers, history, current events, and daily activities. They will also engage in reading and discussion of literature and film studies in the target language, including short stories, poetry, and literature extracts and video.

Spanish I  60.0710   1 CRE
This course presents the culture and language of Spanish people. Students are introduced to basic vocabulary and grammar in order to be able to understand, read, speak, and write the Spanish language.

Spanish II  60.0720   1 CRE
This course expands the students’ vocabulary and grammar. Students study Spanish culture and geography in greater depth, and emphasis on conversational Spanish is continued. Spanish art, history, and literature are also introduced.

Spanish III  60.0730   1 CRE
This course will continue to build upon previous knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Emphasis will be placed on usage of vocabulary and grammar in practical conversations, and everyday situations. The students will also become familiar with the literature, music, culture, and basic history of Spanish-speaking countries.

Spanish IV  60.0740   1 CRE
This course is designed to further develop writing and speaking fluency at an intermediate to advanced level. Students will expand their understanding of advanced grammatical concepts through reading and discussion of historical events, short stories, poetry and literature. Individual and group discussion sessions will explore the impact that Spanish-speaking countries make in our society today.
