The Selective Studies program consists of the Study Skills 902 classes,
monitoring of classroom accommodations needed by the students with
psycho-educational testing, and arranging for special testing accommodations on
college entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT, if this is deemed necessary.
The Selective Studies staff or a parent may monitor students who have
psycho-educational testing on file at Providence and who receive accommodations
in the classroom based on this evaluation. These accommodations might include
extra time on testing, preferential seating in the classroom, oral testing,
testing in a quiet room, etc. The Selective Studies teacher or parent may keep
in communication with each student’s classroom teachers to help solve any
problems your student may have.
Study Skills 902 is a class that offers a combination of study skills,
knowledge of one’s own personal learning style, and accountability for using
both – all in the comfort of a “college dorm” setting. Classroom accommodations
are monitored, as well as extended time available on college entrance exams for
students with proper documentation. The Study Skill 902 student is educated
about his disability and shown how to turn it into a gift in his life. He
learns to advocate for himself about any help he may need in the classroom.
Emphasis is placed upon skills learned and practiced that will carry over as he
transitions onto a college campus. Students are in class with others of their
own grade level. Enrollment in Study Skills 902 is for one semester after which
the student’s progress is evaluated. A maximum of six (6) semesters may be
taken during four years.

High School Level Eligibility
Any student at Providence who has current psycho-educational testing (within
the past three years) on file with the school is eligible for the Selective
Studies Program.
Excluded are students who have a learning condition primarily
due to social or behavioral issues (such as NLD, autism or AS), or who need a
small classroom to thrive, and students who do not have the IQ potential to
learn a college-prep curriculum.
